Residents FAQ
Q. When is the Rally?
A. The rally will start on Thursday evening September 3 2009 with a Rally Show and Super Special Stage (a stage conducted through the streets of Murwillumbah). Competition over gravel roads in the Kyogle and Tweed Shires will be on Friday September 4, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6.
Q. When will my road be closed during the rally and for how long?
A. Although the route is yet to be finalised we can advise that generally individual roads will be “closed” on one day only. However during that day, residents and their guests will be allowed access (probably in one predetermined direction) during specific “windows” of time.
The competition and the setting up of the course will take between 3 and 4 hours for each passage of the course and it is planned to have competitors generally do two passages over each piece of road. This effectively means that for residents and essential traffic, your road will probably not be completely closed for more than 4 hours at a time.
Q. What about use of the roads during competitors’ Reconnaissance?
A. Reconnaissance (or “recce”) is performed by competitors in normal road-going cars at normal road speeds, on the Tuesday (September 1) or Wednesday (September 2) prior to the rally. We will be suggesting to Council that in the interests of safety, where possible we make the relevant roads “one way” during the hours of daylight, for those days. A specific timetable will be published several months prior to the rally and all residents will be advised in writing.
Q. What if there is an emergency during the time my road is closed?
A. Repco Rally Australia will provide you with an emergency number to call which will put you straight through to someone in rally control who can assist you in the event of an emergency. A number of different contingency plans will be developed to ensure that every possible potential emergency situation can be dealt with.
Q. Can spectators access my property?
A. Not without your permission. The public will only have access to your property should you agree with Repco Rally Australia to have a Spectator Point on your property. We will be speaking with a number of property owners about the possible use of their property for controlled spectator areas or parking areas. You will be able to invite friends to view the action from your property.
Q. What about dust?
A. Over the next few weeks Repco Rally Australia staff will be visiting individual properties to address your concerns including dust. At this time our staff will work with you to assess the situation and investigate prevention, mitigation or remedial solutions.
Q. What if something happens to my fence?
A. In the unlikely event of an incident occurring at your property where any fencing or gate is damaged there are two options. Obviously temporary fencing will be provided as soon as possible after the incident. Following this either you can fix the fence yourself (at our expense at an agreed price) or we can organise our contractor to come and fix it for you. When we visit you, we will ask you which option you prefer. (Note: we will be using local fencing contractors and would like to hear from any interested party).
Q. I am a property owner and I am worried about liability issues if there is an accident affecting my property. What is the insurance arrangement?
A. The Organisers as part of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) are covered under a Master Policy which includes, amount many other things, coverage for Public Liability to a maximum of $100 million. This specifically includes indemnity for landowners. A copy of the policy details will shortly be available on our website or can be requested from our office.
Q. Does Repco Rally Australia have an Environmental Policy?
A. Yes. You can view our Environmental Policy on our website: www.rallyaustralia.com.au
Q. How will my community benefit from the rally?
A. Community groups will be encouraged to be a part of the rally. The rally is also an excellent opportunity for local groups and organisations to establish activities to support local fundraising initiatives. Of course there is the broader issue of the large economic impact that as event of this magnitude will bring to the area, plus the tourism exposure (international and domestic) that the media coverage of the rally will bring. In addition we have a policy of “buying locally” wherever we can, in order to support local businesses.
Q. What about wildlife in the area?
A. Repco Rally Australia has planned to engage the assistance of wildlife vets/carers who will travel through the stages after the rally cars have been through each stage. In the unlikely event that an animal has been injured our wildlife recovery procedures will be implemented and an immediate response initiated.
Q. How can I volunteer to be an Official at the event?
A. It’s simple! All you need to do is log on to our website www.rallyaustralia.com.au and fill out an Expression of Interest. This form is located under our “officials” tab on our website. We have hundreds of positions available and encourage anybody to be a part of our event.
If you have not had any prior motor sport experience, we have an excellent training programme which will be available to you, in your local area. We need a lot of help with this World Championship event. We also encourage families to become involved. Even teenagers can become trained officials and work with other members of the family.
Q. Will we be able to purchase tickets locally?
A. Tickets are being sold through Ticketek as our appointed ticketing agency. In Rally week, additional tickets sale points will operate in close proximity to the Special Stage Spectator points and also at the Tweed Super Special Stage/Speed On Tweed precinct in Murwillumbah.
