Repco Rally Australia To Be A ‘Waste Wise Event”

The Repco Rally Australia World Rally Championship round in the New South Wales Northern Rivers on 3-6 September will be a “Waste Wise Event” following recommended practices to avoid, minimise, recycle or re-use waste.

The recommendations are contained in a Waste Management Plan prepared for the event by HMC Environmental Consulting Pty Ltd, of Tweed Heads.

HMC said Rally Australia should aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, protect public health and ensure sites used during the event remained clean and appealing to spectators.

It assessed the creation and handling of waste before, during and after the rally from sources including rally car servicing, spectators, food stalls, suppliers, packaging and printed promotional material.

Details down to the number and siting of toilets and rubbish bins are specified in the Plan.

Monitoring and measurement conducted during the rally will be used later to review and update the plan.

Repco Rally Australia Organising Committee Chairman Garry Connelly said the Waste Management Plan would help the event run to high environmental standards.

“It’s important for all concerned, whether they are spectators, competitors or workers, that we deal with the waste we create from all sources effectively and appropriately” he said.

“That is essential for comfort and health and, of course, we also recognise the necessity of reducing the amount of waste we create in the first place, then maximising what we are able to recycle or re-use.

“This plan takes into account Rally Australia’s own waste management and minimisation policy, which is part of our overall environmental policy and can be viewed on the event website.”
